To the north, deep clear lakes are perfect for smallmouth bass and trout. The eastern mountain lakes have giant muskies and the Ohio River along the state's northern border is excellent for blue catfish that can be more than 100 pounds! Wildlife has re-established itself in the mountainous hardwood forests to the east, the grasslands in the central region and the swamps along the Mississippi River to the southeast - bald eagles, black bears, elk and bison can be found roaming. Kentucky is also one of the most ATV/OHV-friendly states, using reclaimed coal mining land for miles and miles of trails. There are 180 golf courses scattered across the state, with the oldest being the Middlesboro Country Club, open since 1889. The Kentucky Parks Golf Trail offers 13 championship 18-hole courses, six of which make up the Signature Series.
